In true Elon Musk style, he entertained Twitter users last night with tweets about his company, promising to slash the model S price to $69420. What’s the meaning behind 69420, you ask? We’ll explain.
It’s reported that Elon cut the prices in response to Lucid reducing their entry-level sedan price to $69,900.
Then Elon tweeted, “The gauntlet has been thrown down! The prophecy will be fulfilled. Model S price changes to $69,420 tonight!”
What’s the meaning of 69420?
So we’re sure we don’t have to explain what the two separate numbers mean to anyone who’s been on the internet in the last decade. But, 69 is a sex position and 420 is internet slang for weed. Classic.
But, what you might not know is the number also appears in the equation for Pi, although in the long version that you’re not taught at school. You have Reddit to thank for this discovery.
Musk’s history with the number
Although we won’t dwell too much on any possible history between Elon and the first numbers, he has a comedic streak with the use of 420 in his business.
In August 2018 he tweeted that he was considering taking Tesla private and changing stocks to $420. The US Securities and Exchange Commission didn’t find his tweet so funny though, and he eventually was accused of misleading investors, leading him to step down as chairman of Tesla.
Plus, Elon isn’t a stranger to weed meme culture, and the internet watched him smoke weed with Joe Rogan on The Joe Rogan Experience in 2018.
